I was born in Mecca. Ity parents were free people. I was
kidnapped by bedouins while I was very young and taken to
Jubail. In Jubail they sold me to one Mubarak bin Ali. I
used to go for diving and earn for him. He t<bok all of my
earning and aid not give me anything to spend on myself. In
winter I go for fishing. iVhen at Jubail, before going for
diving, I asked him to give me two
rupees

I asked for one rupee and still he refused to do so. Then
he took me to the diving banks with him which was against
my will. I came to Bahrain with him recently. As soon as
we arrived at Bahrain,! repeated the same icquest but
without any use. He even did not give me one ruppe to spend
while I am at Bahrain.
Finding it impossible to serve him any longer owin& to
his ill-treatment to me, I escaped from nim and came to the

Many of the items in the file relate to the financial difficulties caused by Gulf's dwindling pearling industry, and the effects this had on the status of region's slaves. The file includes numerous applications made by pearl divers for barwa – documents freeing them of their contractual obligations to their nākhud ā (boat captain). Copies of barwas are included throughout the file. Other correspondence (folios 98-99) raises the issue of pearl divers with debts fleeing from the pearling towns on the Trucial Coast A name used by Britain from the nineteenth century to 1971 to refer to the present-day United Arab Emirates. to Bahrain.
