bourhood of Bahrein announced his intention of attacking the island, as
forming part of Nejd, over which claims were asserted by, Egypt. He
was informed that the British Government could not admit any claim of
Wvnt to Bahrein. In 1843 the British Government declined to recog-
nize similar claims advanced by Persia to sovereignty over Bahrein,
^bnrtlv after the conclusion of the engagement of 184< (JSc. AAilij,
overtures were made to the Chief of Bahrein by the Turkish authorities
at Basrah with the object of obtaining his recognition of the supremacy;
f the Porte. The ministers of the Sultan were informed that, as the
British Government had had treaty relations with Bahrein as an inde-
nendent power, they could not acknowledge or acquiesce m any arrange-
' ^ ent f 0 r placing the island under the sovereignty or piotection of the
Porte.
The Chiefs of Bahrein were not parties to any, of the agreements con-
eluded after 1820 with the Arab Chiefs, except the Engagement (see
Trucial Arab Chiefs of Oman, No. XXIII) for the suppressmn of the ,

(ff 305-328 and ff 617-640) and Treaties and Engagements Relating to Oman (Muscat) (ff 406-422 and ff 641-657). Also included are copies of related treaties, agreements, and correspondence for the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. (ff 329-405 and ff 540-616) and Oman sections (ff 423-477 and ff 485-539), which cover the periods 1806-1927 and 1798-1928 respectively.
