received letters from the people of our country we were compelled to go to them to
watch the aggressive attitude of the tyrant and proud clans which continue to
correspond with the Shafai Arab Chiefs at every time and in every place and overawe
them with such action which, God wijling, they cannot bring into effect. In case
any of their letters &nd force come to your direction we expect that on your receivino- ^
the same you will be good enough to do much good arrangements for the purpose of
causing the frustration of their corruptive trickery and to exert yourself in attempt
ing to consolidate the word of the Shafai tribesmen for safeguarding their borders
from the wickedness of those frustrated enemies. This is because you are the father
of the Arabs and have the power to bring them together at this moment.* All
Muslims are like one foundation, some parts strengthening others. May it not be
hidden to you also that all the people of our direction and its suburbs are prepared to
oppose them and we have lately made a solemn compact with the heads*of the
Aulakis for mutually helping and following each other at any time of necessity
We have commanded them to correspond with you and to tender their submission
to you. We hope that they will fulfil their promise in all respects. For your
information we have written this letter to you. Shortly we shall, God willing, give
you all the particulars. Salams and peace of God be upon you. God is all-sufficient
for us and He is our best agent. Give our compliments to our Habib Husen bin
Hamid bin Shaikjian and to our asylun Ahmed bin Mohamed Al-Mihdar and his
sons.

We send you this letter from Nisab, the country of the Aulakis, where the news
is good. \\ e inform you that we have received letters from the Zaidis requesting
us to go to them and enter into alliance/them and that failing to do
so they would march against us. They are very powerful and have a laree force,
guns an ammunition. They also say that they would march against Hadramaut.
Unexpectedly our sheikh and leader Sheikh Atiq bin Ahmed came to us and
acquainted us with the treachery and wrongfulness of the Zaidis. As a result we
entered into solemn conventions with him to follow him. On making up his mind
