To—The Hon’ble Mr. A. H. Grant, C.S.L, C.I.E., Foreign Secretary to the
Government of India in the Foreign and Political Department, Simla.
Letters received from various sources state that Turks and Zaidis have attacked
and pillaged Juban, Nawa and Rubeaten and that our friend Syed Muhammad
Darwish, who has lately gone back from here, has collected men at Shaib and is
fighting the Zaidis. In this connection please see paragraph 3 of my Weekly Letter
dated the 24th February 1917.
Nawa and Rubeaten are within our sphere. Juban went over to the Turks as
the result of the last boundary demarcation. The Sheikh of the place is however
friendly to us and has made repeated overtures for a treaty which we have of course
always politely declined.
2. Sultan Abdul Kadir, the grandson of the Fadli Sultan, writes that the Turks
have gone back to Lahej but that they are expected to return in greater force. He
also writes that they have taken with them to Lahej our friend the Fulesi Sheikh
(vide paragraph 1 of Weekly Letter dated the 17th March 1917).
3. Reports are coming in of continued unrest in the Turkish Yemen. The
fighting between Ibn Nasir Mukbil and others referred to in paragraph 4 of Weekly
Letter dated the 3rd March 1917 appears to continue.
4. Sheikh Ali Nasir the Alawi complains of intrigues by Mukbil Abdulla, the
notorious cousin of the Kotaibi Sheikh. He says that the Kotaibis are his
enemies and Mukbil Abdulla sets Ali Saeed Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. against him. The latter has
given powers to the Haushabi Sultan and Mukbil Abdulla to collect taxes.
