Saiyicl Muhammad Taha of Jabel Jihaf, our news correspondent in the Amiri
country, confirms the report in paragraph 1 of my Weekly Letter dated 2nd May
regarding the pillaging of Juban by the Zaidis. ’He does not mention Nawa or
Rubeaten.
2. The Saiyid further states that all negotiations for the district from Kataba
to Mawia are being carried on by Muhammad Nasir Mukbil, and the affairs of Taiz

with the assistance of the Turks, who have, at the request of Muhammad .Nasir

3 Please see paragraph 2 of Weekly Letter dated 9th April last. The
Yusufivin Sheikh (Turkish) writes to the Abdali Sultan and his brother Mohsm
Fadl that the fighting with sons of Noman Mukbil of Hujaria continued for V
3 months ; that when the guns arrived from Lahej, the houses (Yusufiyms) were /
demolished. The Yusufiyin retired to the country and continued to fight irom the
hills and dars finally compelling the enemy to retire to the Kobati country, the
Sheikh adds that the YusufWare weakened by lack of funds and want money
from the British Government. I sent him before Rs. 2,000 which he has acknow
ledged and I am arranging to send him another Rs. 2,000 immediately.
4 According to information received by the Italian Consul here from the
Commissioner of the Northern Italian Somaliland, the Mad Mullah seems to be
having a bad time. It is said that cholera and famine are raging m his camp
causiim numerous deaths and that many persons are fleeing from his camp without
fear ofbeL pursued ; that there is scarcity of ammunition, the famous German
armourer Emil Kerx having used up all the powder and ca P^ leS ^^^XLe
with him from Abyssinia ; that murrain is prevalent among the cattle ^mcii are
dyintf. The cause of the prevalence of this disease is ascribed to the lack of goo
pasturage of which the cattle are deprived at present owing to the constant raic
of the Mijjerteins.
