the only neve of any importance received this
week from the Yemen ie a letter from theYueufiyin Sheikh
(vide para 3 of V. L. dated 2?th June 1917 ) to the Abdali
Sultan. The Sheikh eende a letter addressed to him by Ka^ib
Kassan bin (iaseim Abu liae, brother of Abu Has ^0 hae been
killed by the Turks, in which the ha^ib asks the Yusuiiyin
for assistance in men and ammunition. According to the K^ib
the fighting has already started and the Arabs hare been
successful at Di“Sefal and A1 Ka*ida. he says that all the
hifal-el-hashri^ (i.e. the eastern tribes) have risen and
that 700 of them have already arrived and 3000 more are on
their way.
The Yusufiyin Sheikh says that he has built a shell-
proof dar (fort) and asks the Abdali Sultan to try and get
him te monetary assistance from us,,to enable him to
enlist men to fight the common foe.
Kamaran reports that the general effect of the
bombardment of Hodeidah is good. The main sufferers are
j however, as we anticipated, the British Indian prisoners.
These men are now reported to be treated actually as prisoned
and kept under guard about 2 miles out of Hodeidah during
the day and in the Military Barracks at ni*£it.
Reports of continued unrest in the Yemen continue,
but for the minute it is impossible to piece the stories
together and form any definite opinion as to who is the
moving spirit.
