These letters speak for themselves. I also attach a
copy of a translation of a communique issued by him which
was received by Khan Bahadur Sayed Hussein. It is undated
but 'from the last sentence is probably issued sometime in
August or early September.
Yfe have just received authentic information of a
strong Turkish detachment being sent against Shukra. I am
sending two companies by sea to Shukra for a few days to

Khan Bahadur Sayed Hussein A1 Mahdar came to Aden
last week to press for assistance for His Highness the
Sultan. I have already addressed you on this matter.
•After some discussion he returned to Mokalla and His
Highness himself came to Aden and is here now awaiting
a favourable reply to his requests. The Sultan and his.
minister have been loyal friends’to us and I attribute
a good deal of the quietude which exists in the Eastern
protectorate to their influence and example. The letters
attached show that considerable pressure has been brought
on the Sayed to break his allegiance.
The state of affairs thett at present promises to
give trouble unless assistance is forthcoming. j-he
Kathiris have been a source of trouble to the Sultan for
a long time. At present he is fighting them near Seyum,
apparently with some success as he reports the destruction
Of two dhars. But the Kathiri Sultans and tribesmen are
x /vh- m0 gtly wealthy* and backed by the Turks as they are, they
have succoeded in - bribin s the Humumi tribe to conimit acts
of open rebellion against the Sultan of Mokalla. This
