Resume of events in Rgypt from the Armistice
up to the present time.
Almost immediately after the Armistice a
deputation of Egyptian Rationalists headed by Saad Zaghloul
called on Sir Reginald Wingate, then High Commissioner,
at the Residency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, established in the provinces and regions considered part of, or under the influence of, British India. in Cairo and presented claims of a far
reaching character amounting to a demand for the complete
independence of Egypt and the withdrawal of all British
control. Sir R. Wingate though he received the deputation
did not give any encouragement to them and Saad Zaghloul's
active agitation dates from that day.
Shortly afterwards Rushdy Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. then Prime
Minister proposed that ; he should visit England, together
with his colleague Adly Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. and certain of the nationalist
leaders, in order to discuss with His Majesty*s Government
the future status of Egypt. At the time it was not con
sidered desirable to receive the nationalist leaders whose
immoderate demands could not possibly be granted and owing
to the pressure of work due to the Peace Conference Rushdy
and Adly were requested to postpone their visit. Their
position was already becoming difficult owing to Zaghloul’s
agitation and Rushdy Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. tendered his resignation. This
was not immediately accepted and he and Adly were later
invited to visit England but they refused to do so unless
accompanied by the nationalist leaders.
Meanwhile the situation was so unsatisfactory
that in February 1919 Sir R. Wingate was recalled to
London to discuss with His Majesty 1 s Government the policy
which should be pursued. The Rationalist Party continued
their agitation and adopted methods of intimidation which
