Memorandum.
At my last interview with Ibn Sa‘ud, held on the afternoon of
Monday, the 2nd November, His Highness referred to a project he
had formed of sending a delegation on his behalf to Egypt, Palestine,
‘Iraq and India, with the object, ostensibly at any rate, of making
arrangements for next year’s pilgrimage. His Highness informed
—me that he had written to the British Consul, Jedda, to ask him for
the necessary facilities, but that no final reply had yet been received.
His original request was made some two months ago, and a month
later he received a letter from the Consul at Jedda enquiring, on
behalf of the Government of India, about the composition of ’ the
delegation. Since then no further communication had been received
by His Highness, and he wished therefore to ask me whether I would
enquire about this matter and do my best to expedite the granting of
the necessary permit to enable the delegation to start. His Highness
also added that Sheikh Hafiz Wahba was to be a member of that
delegation, and hinted that possibly the Government of India might
have objected to his inclusion in the delegation.
I replied to His Highness that I would certainly make enquiries
about this matter with a view to expediting the reply of the authorities
concerned.
GILBERT CLAYTON,
His Britannic Majesty's
Commissioner and Plenipotentiary.
British Agency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, headed by an agent. , Jedda.
5th November, 1925.
