The Colonial Office have already
been informed that the Secretary of State will send
a representative to the inter-departmental conference
on British relations with Nejd. The chief question
is that of revising the war-time treaty. The
agenda for the meeting has now been received witn
Major Young*s letter of the 2nd March. Brief notes
on the items are attached. Items 2, 6 and 7 are
those of the most direct interest to India. References
are made in the Agenda to the pages of Sir G.Clayton* s
report in which the subjects are mentioned. The whole
report of the course of his negotiations is of
interest, although the relations of Nejd to
Transjordan
Used in three contexts: the geographical region to the east of the River Jordan (literally ‘across the River Jordan’); a British protectorate (1921-46); an independent political entity (1946-49) now known as Jordan
and Iraq are of no direct concern to
India.
Attention is also invited to the
Foreign Office letter of the 1st March, P.791, which
sets forth their reasons for avoiding delay in
recognising Ibn Saud as King of the Hejaz. As will
be seen from the enclosure the formal recognition was
qualified, in order to meet the Government of
India's views, by a declaration that His Majesty's
Government had no desire to express any opinion
regarding the regime of the Holy Places and all
religious questions connected therewith.
A draft letter to the Colonial
Office is submitted, nominating a representative to
attend the Conference.
