the Hejaz which is so unpopular in India, at all
events among Moslem politicians. There is also
another point to he considered. Ihn Saad is one ot
these great personalities which the desert only-
throws up about once in a century. T e himself
admits (Report paragraph 8) that "his authority
in Nejd rested entirely in his personal ascendancy
over hi^ subjects", and there is no likelihood
whatever that his successor will have the same
ascendancy or perhaps any at all. Unless
therefore the treaty were a purely personal one,
it might be very dangerous. Accordingly, as Sir
G. Clayton promises to set forth his observations
on this matter in a separate communication, it
would seem wise to postpone consideration.
As regards a subsidy - not only will the
Government of India refuse to contribute, but Indian
Moslem politicians will strongly object to what they
will represent as the maintenance of the Holy Places
with British money, which the Mullah Powindah once
described as "the dung of the donkey oi Antichrist".
