Secretary of State.
India’s direct interest in Ibn Saud is
due only to the fact that he has, by conquest, made
himself master of the Holy Places, in the safety of
which Indian Moslems are vitally concerned. Their
attitude towards him is divided. During the war
Indian political Moslem opinion was strongly
pro-Turk; the revolt of the Shereefial family at
British instigation was intensely resented; and the
disappearance first of Husain and then of Ali under
successive blows from Ibn Baud was so far very
popular in India and has given him a body of
supporters, who are further encouraged by the fact
that the conditions of the pilgrimage have improved
under his auspices. On the other hand, he is
the head of a puritanical and fanatical sect among
whose tenets is disrespect for tombs; and Indian
Moslems are nervous lost he should be unwilling, or
even unable, to protect the tomb of the Prophet
