1. Before proceeding to discuss the first point
on the agenda (copy attached), the question of who should
be entrusted by His Majesty’s Government with the conduct of
the proposed negotiations for a revised treaty with Ibn
Saud was raised. Sir J. Shuckburgh said that for his part
he would be perfectly content to leave this to Mr • Jordan, the
British Consul and Agent at Jeddah, who was the man on the
spot, and, moreover, appeared to be persona gyatfir with Ibn
Saud. Mr. Oliphant explained that Mr. Jordan would not be
remaining at Jeddah much longer. His posting to Jeddah
had been purely temporary, and he had already overstayed the
original term of his appointment. It would not oe safe - ere
fore,to count upon his being available to conduct the
negotiations. It was decided to recommend that if Mr.
Jordan were available he should be entrusted with tne
negotiations, but if before the negotiations opened hr.
