.
After discu8sion t the Conference came to the general
conclusion that it would be unwise to co vnit H.M # G* to
recognise the extent fcf Ibn Sa f ud , s domains or to commit
K.M*G# to protecting territories outside those domaiis since
it was questionable whother, in fact t military protection
would be given to the Chiefs of the Persian Gul f should
Ibn Sahd attempt to overrun them; and that H*M.G« should be
left free to take what action they considered necessary
in particular cases. In negotiating the revised treaty
w ith Ibn Sa 9 ud t who was probably fully aware of H.M.G , s
obligations in Pastern Arabia, it could be pointed out that
it was not necessary to define the authority of either party
save in regard to Palestine. Trans Jordan and Iraq where
1*- ^ ^ a special position was created by the relatione of H.M.G#
Protocol . With the amendment of the words “The High
British Government" agreed upon in regard to the Treaty,
the preliminary draft was accepted. The Foreign office
representatives said that Ibn Sa’ud would probably endeavour
to modify the frontier suggested so as to include Akaba
within the Ilejaz. Group Ja otain ^urnett said that he
thought such a proposal must be resisted.
Sir G.Clayton urged the importance of attaching a first
class Arabic scholar to hr.Jordan to assist him in <ealino
with the numerous revised drafts which Ibn Sard’s adviseiS
would no doubt put forward, and he suggeste .< tnat r.Antoniui
who was known to Ibn Sa , ud , e advisers and had dealt witn
them very successfully during the negotiation of the adia
and Bahra Agreements might be selected for the purpose.
