consideration Mr.Amery and the
Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs
t
(to whose department a copy of this
letter is being sent) will agree that
it would be worth while to include in
the draft revised treaty which it is
intended to lay before Ibn Saud ; an
article repeating the substance of <
Article VI of the presentIreaty.
In regard to the objection, which is
understood to be held by the Colonial
Office, that Ibn Baud would probably
reject such an article, the Secretary
of State and the Government of India
hold the view that it is at least equall
probable that he v/ould accept it, as
y
a matter of course, as merely re-stating
an obligation to which he is already
committed. If he were to accept it,
the formal renewal in the revised
. treaty of his previous promise would
| in itself be some guarantee of the
integrity of the rulers in question,
and would nothin the Secretary of
State’s view, have the effect of
committing His Majesty's Government
any more than are already committed by
the several treaties with the Persian
Gulf rulers, to take action in their
defence in the event of the promise
| no ^ being strictly observed. Nor, if
Ibn Saua were to refuse tte renewal ^
