I fancy he hrs little more than his pension. Local opinion
has not hesitated to dub him Abdul Girsh, Slave of Tuppence
Ha’penny, instead of Abdullah, Slave of God.
I recently attended the funeral of my very temporary
Turkish colleague, an old man and diseased, who should never have
been sent here; he lasted a fortnight. In spite of the purity
of the religion hereabouts, I was admitted to the graveside
ceremony but was shocked to hear betting running high, on my
bein# the next convert. The hope that others will follow
Philby’s lead is apparently fortified in my case by the
possession of at least one of the outward and physical signs
of grace, a beard, Now don’t drive me to itl
Yours sincerely,
(Sd.) C.G.HOPE GILL.
