King Ali in the sense of the instructions contained in the
Secretary of State’s telegram No.298 of 15th October, 1924,
referred to above, so that he may be prepared to discuss
this question with the Amir Abdullah.

His Majesty’s Government, but urges that the frontier be
extended to include Tebuk and that the town of Akaba be
also included in Trans-Jordan.

by the Secretary of State without reference but I an sub
mitting Riza Pasha’s views to the Secretary of State for
consideration.

was of opinion that the Amir would be
reluctant personally to undertake negotiations, fearing
that he might be charged with working to transfer portions
of the independent Hijaz to the British mandated territory
of Trans-Jordan, but the urgent necessity for protection
of the area in question and the danger of its being occupied
by Wahabite forces in pursuance of their attacks on the
Hijaz should be sufficient to overcome his reluctance.
8. His Majesty’s Government have clearly stated
that they are not prepared to intervene in the hostilities
now in progress between Sultan Ibn Saud and the hijaz,
they would, therefore, find it difficult to justify
measures for the protection of the Ma’an district as long
as it remained under the "de facto” administration of the
Hijaz.
