Paraphrase of telegram from the && Commissioner for Palestine to
the Secretary of State for the Colonies. Dated 2nd January.
•'' v . ^ JSg <s] o J
(Received, Colonial Office, 8.X0 f.m. 2nd January, 19250
Addressed Secretary of State for the Colonies No. 3 repeated
to Bushire and Baghdad No. 6.
Copies of correspondence between the Resident Bushire and
Sultan of Nejd have just been received from Baghdad from which it
appears that Ibn Saud has been informed that His Majesty's
Government regard Trans-Jordan boundary as excluding Wadi A seasonal or intermittent watercourse, or the valley in which it flows. Sirhan,
with the exception of Azrak.
Information has been received at Amman that the Wahabi
Commander at Jauf has intimated that he now proposes to proceed
with the occupation of ^Kaf. I would once more draw attention to
the great danger to the future of Trans-Jordan! a and the risk
indirectly to Palestine should the Wady Sirhan be definitely
included within the Territory of Nejd . Large tribes pf Bedouins
which spend part of the year in Wadi A seasonal or intermittent watercourse, or the valley in which it flows. Sirhan and part in Trans-
Jordan proper would, in self protection, become Wahabite in tendency.
I fully realise that prevention of Ibn Baud's occupation by
military action is impossible but I must express regret that ne
! has now been definitely informed that Wadi A seasonal or intermittent watercourse, or the valley in which it flows. Sirhan is outside the
area which is regarded by His Majesty's Government as Trans
jordanian. In letter of 8th November to Bushire Sultan of Nejd
said that he was willing to enter into negotiations with His
Majesty’s Government on these questions, and I would again urge
that if and when negotiations are opened, the solution should, if
possible, be adopted that the Wadi A seasonal or intermittent watercourse, or the valley in which it flows. Sirhan should revert to the
administration of Nuri Sha Alan, and should not be regarded ae
within the Territories either of Trans-Jordania or of Nejd.
