X am directed by Mr« Secretary Chamberl&in to
trsnemit to you, to be laid before Mr# Secretary ‘^mery,
the accompanying copy of & telegram from His Majesty's
Agent and Consul at Jeddah, reporting a rumour that the
Hejaz Oovornment have enlisted several hundred recruits
in the neighbourhood of Aden*
2# The Secretary of State is of opinion that it
would be highly undesirable that these men should be
allowed to sail from the ports of Aden or Mokallah as m
organized unit; and I am to suggest, for Mr# Aaery's
consideration, that early instructions should be sent by
telegram to the
Political Resident
A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency.

The correspondence covers: responses to the invasion by the Muslim League of Bombay [Mumbai], the Khalifat Committee and its leader, Maulana Shaukat Ali, and the President of the Supreme Religious Court in Egypt; the question of the fate of Islam’s holy cities; reports of attempts by the King of Hejaz, ‘Alī ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn ‘Alī al-Hāshimī, to recruit troops in the Aden Protectorate; the British Government’s disapproval of King Ali’s attempts to recruit troops in a British territory; the enlistment of Palestinians, Trans Jordanians and Egyptians in to the Hejaz army.
