Report on the Vilayet of Adana.
Boundaries .—The Vilayet of Adana, chief town of the same name, one of the
smallest provinces of Asiatic Turkey, is hounded on the north by the Vilayets of
Koniah and Sivas; on the south by the Mediterranean Sea; on the east by the
Vilayets of Aleppo and Angora; and on the west by that of Koniah.
Area .—Its area is estimated at 30,000 square miles.
Subdivisions .—It is divided into five sandjaks, viz., Adana, Itchyel, Kozan, and
Jebel Bereket, each governed, with the exception of Adana, which is the seat of the
Governor-Genera], by a Mutessarif or Governor. These five sandjaks are again sub
divided into nineteen cazas, each governed, with the exception of those where the
Mutessarifs reside, by a Kaimakam or Sub-Governor.

Population. —The total population, as given by the Saluamd, or official handbook
of the province, of March 1890, is 384,365, viz., 201,730 males and 172,635 females,
but the addition of the items given in the preceding Table only arrives at 371,171,
showing a discrepancy of over 13,000. Admiral Woods, of the Turkish navy, in a
Table of the populations of Asia Minor, recently published by him, gives the popula
tion of the Vilayet of Adana as 378,698, divided into the following sects

The Christian element given by official Beturns is, however, considered by all to
be understated. The total population may therefore be said to be something under

This volume consists of an envelope of notes and printed papers that make up some ancillary materials collected by George Curzon at the time of the publication of his book, Persia and the Persian Question . The notes consist of official correspondence on Persia from the British Government, archaeological surveys, and more recent published material on the trade and regional affairs of Persia, particularly the ports of the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. and its trade with India. The papers were originally kept in a large envelope, which is found at the back of the volume.
