The 12th stage on the trade-route, 24 miles west of Chati Sandart and
east of Kohcii. 'llhe accommodation provided for travellers at Tratoh
consists of a serai of four rooms with a small courtyard In front, the whole
being encircled by an eight-foot wall. There is also a chappar khana.
Two wells at this halting-place have been provided With watering troughs
and windlasses for drawing water ; the water in each well is about 15 feet
froiii the ground surface. It is very salt', but endeavours are being
made to find better water iri the vicinity.
Camel-grazing ahd firMvriod are scarce here.. In 1903 a new well
du^ abdut a mile east of the thahn produced Water less salt than in the
irt-mainder, but the Water from this also acts as a powerful purgative.

A hill somewhere away to the west of Arbo in the north-west desert of
Baluchistan.

A peak of the Malik Naru range about 8 miles west of Chagai fort.
TUMPA GAZ—
A halting-place on Lockwood's route from Barabchah to Chagai, 23
miles south-west of the former place. 1 h^re is neitht r grass nor water
here, but fuel and carilel-grhzing in the shape of tamarisk are plentiful.
A road joins in here from Lai Khan Chah. (Lockwood.)
UMAR SHAH—Lat. 29° 34' ; Long. 65° 29'; Elev.
A halting-place on the Shah Ismail route from Nushki to the Helmand.
It is four stages (37 miles) from Nushki and six stages (74 miles) to Shah
Ismail There is here'a large pond lying among sand hills, half a mile
to the right of the road. This pond is about 180 yards long by 70 yards
wide, with a continuation 200 yards long by 40 yards wide, the whole of a
depth varying from 5 feet to 3 feet. The water is rain and drainage water,
naturally good, but so tainted at present date (.885) by the thousand and
one camels which daily enter it to drink as to be unpalatable. Small
worms also are found in the water, and the natives drink it through a
cloth. The water is potable, but as abundance of good water exists at the
next sta^e, Zahro, distent 7'miles from here and 17 from Band, Zahro w ould
seem to be preferable to Umar Shah as a halt.ng-place for any troops,
except cavalry and train animals. For these latter, however, Umar Shah
wduTd be preferable, as compared With Zahro, there are greater facilities
for watering animals. This place would also be suitable for a comirns-
^ifraintails in July, this pond does notary up all the year round ; but

Content

A report, marked as secret, on the area of Nushki, Chagai, and Western Sinjarani. The report was compiled in the Intelligence Branch, Quarter Master General's Department. The report was commenced in 1897 by Captain R E Roome, 6th Bombay Cavalry (Jacob's Horse), and revised and completed by Major W C Walton, 104th Wellesley's Rifles, Deputy Assistant Quarter Master General in 1903. It was printed at the Government Central Printing Office, Simla, in 1904.

The report includes a preface by Colonel John E Nixon, Assistant Quarter Master General, Intelligence Branch (folio 5) and a glossary of vernacular terms used (folio 6). The main body of the report contains chapters on geography, communications, fortified posts and forts, climate, sanitation, resources, ethnography, history, administration, and military strength.

The second part of the report includes a gazetteer of topographical and ethnographic information (folios 36-127) and appendices covering wells, canals, and meteorology, and including a report on the signalling stations of the Dalbandin-Robat line, with sketches (folios 131-147).

The volume includes the following maps:
