HA 1 BAT ZIARAT OR ZIARAT-I-MIR HAIBAT
A shrine formed of stones between Charasiaf in Nushki and Sinabur

HALA (OR BRAHUIK) RANGE—
The great mountain system of Baluchistan extending from its
secondary root, the Suhman, by the curved Bugti and Mari chain to the
north of Quetta and thence m a generally south-south-west direction
towards the Indian Ocean, which it reaches at Ras Mawari (Cane Mon.el
from about north latitude 30" 3 o> , 4 ° 4 6'. In bVaffi bend's
in the north from the plains of Kachi to Nushki on the borders of the
Seistan desert; in the centre to the Persian mountain system • whilst at
its southern extremity it is only a few miles across. The height of" this
elevated region varies in a similar manner. The greatest altitude of its
fl °.i. r “a ^ (ab 7 -T fe6 ’• Where the climat e is European •
southward it decreases rapidly until, in the province of Las it is but a
trifling degree greater than that of Sind. It decreases also ’ northward
the height of Quetta being 5,600 feet or thereabouts. Thouglnhis exten
sive mountain mass may well pass under the general name of the
Brahuik plateau, it has locally other names in the several districts
through which its chains extend. Thus that portion which separates the
highland of Sarawan from the low country of Kach Gandava is known as
the Takari; further south and down to the twentv-sixth narallel of
latitude this same chain is called the Kirthar, and thence to the ocean it
oota.ns the name of the Pabb hills. Similarly other offshoots west of
these are known as the Harbu,, the Dauwaru, and the Hara mountains.
These last form a line of demarcation between the Las and Makran
provinces.

Content

A report, marked as secret, on the area of Nushki, Chagai, and Western Sinjarani. The report was compiled in the Intelligence Branch, Quarter Master General's Department. The report was commenced in 1897 by Captain R E Roome, 6th Bombay Cavalry (Jacob's Horse), and revised and completed by Major W C Walton, 104th Wellesley's Rifles, Deputy Assistant Quarter Master General in 1903. It was printed at the Government Central Printing Office, Simla, in 1904.

The report includes a preface by Colonel John E Nixon, Assistant Quarter Master General, Intelligence Branch (folio 5) and a glossary of vernacular terms used (folio 6). The main body of the report contains chapters on geography, communications, fortified posts and forts, climate, sanitation, resources, ethnography, history, administration, and military strength.

The second part of the report includes a gazetteer of topographical and ethnographic information (folios 36-127) and appendices covering wells, canals, and meteorology, and including a report on the signalling stations of the Dalbandin-Robat line, with sketches (folios 131-147).

The volume includes the following maps:
