diameter. The water is said to be good. n , r
There are three more wells close by, which had partially fallen in,
and several more marks where wells once had been. Also the remains
of the walls of huts. The walls had been built of large stones^ The
jmide attributed them to the Arabs. The southern portion of the Hamun
was for about 400 yards square under water for a depth of 6 inches.
The rest of it was hard pat. The country enclosing it consisting of
information. —Stated to be a large amount of barshok gxsss in
this neighbourhood, but I failed to see any signs of grass beyond a little
vega springing up on the sand-hills. {Roome.)
GAURGAND—
A high jagged hill in North-West Baluchistan. It is passed on the
road from Gazachah to Kanuk, 6 miles from the former, about half-way
between the two places. {Maitland.)
GAWAG— see Zawag.
GAZ—
A camping-ground in Western Baluchistan, in the district of Dehgwar,
west of the Mashkel river. A track leaves the Mashkel river some
miles below Buzurg Gaz, and in six long stages reaches Gaz, whence it
goes on to the district of Zirreh, in the extreme north-west corner of
Baluchistan. At Gaz there is water in a well and fuel and forage.
According to Colonel Bell this place is only two marches (27 miles)
from Camp Mashkel. {Native information—Bell.)
GAZACHAH—Lat. 29 0 32'; Long 64° 5U; Kiev.
A camping-ground lies about 1 mile west of Kungai hill, a very con
spicuous black’htll of igneous rock with three round tops to it. Water
abundant anywhere 4 feet below the surface ; nine wells now exist, all
containing good water. Drubh grass abundant all over the surrounding
country. & From Kani the Baluch-Afghan Boundary Mission left Route 111 ,
Helmand Series, and moved across by Chagai fort to Route II, Helmand
Series. This became necessary, in order to follow along the line of
boundary for demarcation and pillar building.
Up to this point camel-grazing had been exceedingly poor, and one
might almost describe it as nil. This was not so much due to the
absence of bushes as to the fact that up to this date (9th March 1896)
the sap had not risen into the twigs of the bushes. The Mission camels
were accordingly fed with cakes of atta and barley. After leaving Kani
the tamarisk bushes began to shew signs of life.
