Nushki originally belonged to the Mandai tribe, who were,
many generations ago, superseded by the Itakshanis from Kha-
ran. The Itakshanis were in turn overcome by the Mengals who
also appear to have come from Kharan; but the latter, being a
pastoral tribe, did not annex much of the land which remains for
the most part in the hands of the Rakshani cultivators.
The Mengals are divided into two great branches, viz., the
Rad ini and the N<>zai.
The Badini Mengals are subdivided as follows :—
(«) Bajezai, with sub-sections or tomans 10,000 Persian dinars, or a gold coin of that value. the Paindzai, Mir-
zazai, Somari, Kamarzai and Chandiazai.
Tarasizai, with sub-sections the Mazarzai, Ahmadzai,
Saifuddini, Ghewari, Muridz d, Gazozai, Zagarzai and
Totazai.
Amirzai, with sub-sections the Pindokzai, Muradzai,
Shahozai, Zangizai, Barfizai, Mengalzai, Moghalzai,
Changozai and Malikzai.
The Nozai branch is divided into the Mahmudzai, Mandai,
Ahmadwari, Baranzai, Muhammadzai, Daizai and Muhammad
Shah. ai.
Ail the Nozai branch of Mengals and the Tarasizai division
of the Badini brarch are migratory, that is to say, that, while
owning extensive lands in the dak System of postal communication used in Moghul India and later by the East India Company. on the southern side of the fron
tier, they pass the greater part of the year, and in years of drought
the entire year, pasturing their flocks in Afghan Registan.

the Mengals is Muhammad Ali Khan, Bajezai Mengal.
Tho Rakshauis are also divided into two branches, viz., the
Badini, the senior branch, and t! e Jamaldini who have amalgamated
with tho Manda’, the original inhabitants.
The Badmi are divided into the Balazai, Isazai, Yalanzai, Fa-
kiizai, Sor RakTiani, Ghabarzai, Kamarzai, Gurgej, Izatzai, Jahind-
zai, and anoth°r division known as the Makki who emigrated
many generations ago to Seistan, where its members now reside.
1 hey continue, however, to acknowledge the Sardarship of the Ba
dini Rakshani chief, and are subdivided iuto the llalnnanzai, Slia-
karzai, Jogezai and Mir Kbanzai.
The Jamaldini, amalgamated with the Mandai, who are not
of Rakshani descent, are divided into the Karamzai, Shakarzai,
Ramdani, Pehlwanzai and Amirzai, and number in all about 450
fighting-men.
In addition to the Zagar Mengals, Rakshani and Mandai
tribes, some tomans 10,000 Persian dinars, or a gold coin of that value. of the following tribes also reside in or around
Nushki:—
(a) Sayad, under the leadership of a peculiarly sacred Sahib-
zada, named Pir Muhammad Shah, numbering about
12 families.

Content

A report, marked as secret, on the area of Nushki, Chagai, and Western Sinjarani. The report was compiled in the Intelligence Branch, Quarter Master General's Department. The report was commenced in 1897 by Captain R E Roome, 6th Bombay Cavalry (Jacob's Horse), and revised and completed by Major W C Walton, 104th Wellesley's Rifles, Deputy Assistant Quarter Master General in 1903. It was printed at the Government Central Printing Office, Simla, in 1904.

The report includes a preface by Colonel John E Nixon, Assistant Quarter Master General, Intelligence Branch (folio 5) and a glossary of vernacular terms used (folio 6). The main body of the report contains chapters on geography, communications, fortified posts and forts, climate, sanitation, resources, ethnography, history, administration, and military strength.

The second part of the report includes a gazetteer of topographical and ethnographic information (folios 36-127) and appendices covering wells, canals, and meteorology, and including a report on the signalling stations of the Dalbandin-Robat line, with sketches (folios 131-147).

The volume includes the following maps:
