satisfactory the holders would retain their entitlement to their monies; if not, they
were liable to forfeiture. All Indian States were asked to co-operate with the Central
Government by taking similiar action vis a vis their own subjects. Inevitably there was
consternation in the many quarters where profiteering had been rife. How the matter
turned out I have no way of telling as I went on leave shortly after. But many years
later (in fact only two or three months ago as I write) the son of a certain Ruler
whom I had known in the old days and who I believe was quite innocent himself of any
misdemeanour in this respect, told me that, to his certain knowledge, several of the
Kathiawar Princes - especially some of those with sea ports of their own - had made
massive fortunes for themselves out of profiteering and smuggling. He added that, at
the time of the promulgation of the Ordinance, these Rulers had evolved ways of evading
its provisions by exempting themselves from their implementation. What happened to them
and their hoards eventually, I have no means of telling, but certainly, after Independ
ence, our Indian successors in Government proved to be much harder on the Princely Order
than ever the British had been.
