Consul. Before leaving Hyderabad, I was awarded the M.B.E. (Civil) in the 1944 New
Year Honours List. This, the first of such decorations as I was awarded, gave me as
much pleasure as any subsequent and more senior ones. I felt I had earned it during
those two and a half difficult war-time years. I had served under two Residents while
at Hyderabad, Sir Claude Gidney, KCIE, CSI, and Sir Arthur Lothian, KCIE, CSI, under
whom I had served previously while at Mount Abu.
