Dear Rupert,
Referring to your letter of 12th July about the
Shark Liver Oil Industry I have had several talks with my
Directors about starting a
factory
An East India Company trading post.
in the Gulf a They are
not interested in doing so themselves as it is not in their ‘
line but we have collected a list of those who might
consider developing this Industry. You will have^to
be careful to recognise two kinds of oil. (I) Shark Oil
which is used for the same purposes as any fish oil, such.as,
for margarine or for soap making. It contains no vitamins
and has no medicinal properties and (2) Shark Liver Oil
which contains Vitamins and is solely used for medicinal
purposes.
We suggest you might contact the following firms
(1) Messrs. British Cod Liver Oils (Hull and Grimbsay) Ltd..
St. Andrew*s Dock, Hull.
(2) Messrs Van den Berghs and Jurgens Ltd. 58 Harborne Road
Edgbaston, Birmingham, who are the largest margarine
makers in the world, and might be mainly interested in
Shark Oil.
(S) Messrs Letfer Brothers, Port Sunlight, Cheshire.
(4) Messrs. Glaxo Laboratories, Ltd., Greenford, Middlesex.
(5) Messrs The Crooke*s Laboratories, Gorst Road, Park Royal
London N.W.10. The Secretary of the Pharmaceutical Society
Mr. H.N.^Linstead, O.B.E., M.P., 17 Bloomsbury Square,
London. W.C.lo might also be able to help you in either nutting
you on to a firm or an expert in this line.
If you fancy an Indian expert there is Dr.
Sundar Raj who was Director of Fisheries, Madras for many
years and successfully developed the Shark Liver Oil
Industry in Madras. He knows the methods which have been
found to work in the tropics but would not be able to plan
a modern
factory
An East India Company trading post.
for you. He is retired now but might*
consider going to the Gulf to advise. I have not his
address but could get it for you if/you think he would be
of any use to you.
Sgd. Andrew MacCullock.
