It is recommended that trial consignments be made
available as quickly as possible at Abadan. When reactions
have been observed the import could quickly be expanded or
suitably modified*. Various types and qualities of dried fish
are available and experiment and observation will be needed
to determine what is most suitable or acceptable.
The Persian labourers are stated mostly to belong to a Moslem
sect to whom shark is not acceptable* Dried fish are further
discussed in Note V® •
It might also well be worth while suggesting to the Persian
Government that its fish canning

at Bundar Abbas should
try making special types of hards moked fish for use at Abadan*
I understand that the Danes in charge there are capable of this.
(See Note XV.)
ot' the present fresh fish collection scheme *
The quickest and greatest possible expansion of the present
fresh fish collection scheme is recommended. The. degree to
which the present 800 tons per year can be increased cannot
at present be estimated but it can probably be truly said that
it will not be doubled and it may only be possible to a mode
rate extent* The present limiting factors are the quality of
the AIOC_launches used for collection and the number of fisher-
ava: ^ c ^ e within the reliable range of those launches*
- ^ range and reliability of the collecting launches
can be increased ^See Note 1 V„.)j there is a real prospect of
Uocful expansion. Collection from Kuweit* still less Bahrein,
is not practical* (See Notes XI and Xll)*
As expansion^of the fresh fish collection scheme takes placc^
the quantity of ice available may soon prove insufficient (See
Note VI)* A farther important factor which requires atten
tion is the provision of a suitable understudy for Mr. Wylde,
At present it is largely his personality, exertion and fluency
In arable ( the language of the fishermen) which keeps the
scheme in being. It is not easy work and requires a person
of considerable tact and experience*

To obtain a largo increase in the fresh fish availabl'c at
Abadan and really to approach the target, appears to require
modern more productive fishery methods, for example the use of
a full scale trawling and refrigerating vessel (s’).
. of a trawler, by AIOC for work in the Gulf
wich the ooject supplying Abadan, has long been in the air.
lor a oime it was hoped'that a fully equipped large trawler
coula come out from the U, K* under her ov/n power* Negotiations
hov/ever proved unfruitful* Attempts were then' made to obtain
trawler which it was hoped could be shipped to Abadan
on,che deck of a cargo vessel* This plan too proved impossible#
failure of these negotiations but the success
ox otner arrangements, is that AIDC nev/ has at Abadan'
