Urgent.,
Prime Minister was absent in Cairo when my telegrams
No 1293 and 1294 were despatched but I have seen him twice
since his return.
He is most cordial and apparently most anxious tor our
co-operation in various schemes by which he hopes to counter
act the influence of extremists*
He persists however in his view tnat arrival of Lord
Milner 1 s Mission in immediate future will bo fatal to his
efforts to create a (? party) opposed to Baud Zaghlul.
Bitter attacks are being made on Prime Minister by
nationalist and extremist press on the ground that he
supports despatch of Mission which has now become main topic
of political discussions. He has said nothing to me directly
respecting resignation of Government in the even*o of his
advice as to postponement of Mission being disregarded but
I have little aoubt that his official letter must be taken
as a serious threat and that we cannot count upon Ministry
to resist a general movement of protest against Mission.
All reports confirm probability of latter in one form or
another.
Confidenti al*
I have learnt an excellent authority that text of
Prime Minister’s letter was discussed and approved by all trie
Ministers.
