who has baen showing syiaptom of increasing uneasiness and
annoyance at his own position — which I admit is rather
equivocal — has rrm definitely cone out with a letter to ne.

In his conversations with ne he has net as yet nade
any complaint, but this letter is the result of n long interview
between him and Orahanw in which he complained bitterly of the
v/ay in which he had been treated, and endeavoured to ascertain
what he regarded as the charges that had b^en brought against
him or his administration. Graham dealt with him with the
utmost courtesy and conciliation, but did not conceal — as,
indeed, he could not — that at one stage, namely that of the
eerly interview with Zagloul, the Foreign Office thought that
Wingate night advisedly have acted in a different way. Fresh
from this interview, Wingate sits down and writes to me the
