Lord Curzon.
Sir R. Wingate’s letter of June 3rd.
I am afraid that an outburst of this nature
on the part of Sir R. Wingate was sooner or later
inevitable. I have had several difficult inter
views with him at which I was unable to tell
him anything definite with regard to his own
position and future. Sir R. Wingate has felt his
position acutely, and has spent most of his time in
Scotland in order to avoid the questions and
comments which he received in London.
On June 2nd I had a very long interview v/ith
him, lasting an hour and a half, and did my best to
pacify him. But he was evidently greatly upset to
hear that Lord Milner’s Commission would not proceed
to Egypt before the autumn and that it would then
probably be received by General Allenby as Special
High Commissioner and not by himself. He maintain
ed.
