KNOCXMHAIR. DUNBAR. N.B.
25th May 1919.
Dear Mr.Hsxmsworth,
With regard to the diecussion between yourself,
Colonel Wedgwood Bnd Captain Benn described on page 1074 of
the official report (Hansard) of the Parliamentary Debate in
the House of Commons on Thursday, 15th May 1919 on the Foreign
Office Vote, and with special reference to your reply to
Colonel Wedgwood in which you say - n My Honourable and gallant
n friend has frequently tried to draw me about Sir Reginald
n Wingate, I would rather he did not seek to penetrate into
"these rather domestic matters."
T am at some loss to understand what is meant by
"domestic"matters” and I beg you will favour me with some
explanation.
In case you have not seen the correspondence which
took place between Mr.Balfour and myself towards the end of
last March I would draw your attention to the following extract
from my reply to him, dated 29th March : -
"It is possible that questions may arise and that the reasons
"for my retention at home at such a juncture may be criticised,
"but I am confident that - in such circumstances - should my
"personal reputation be brought into question, His Majesty's
"Government will afford me that support which has always
"characterized its attitude towards its responsible officials."
I am, as you can well understand, reluctant to &o
anything to embarrass Government with personal matters at a
time like the present when political events of such great
importance are under consideration in Paris, but I am confident
you will appreciate my reasons for writing to you in the cir-
-cumstances.
Yours sincerely,
The Hon.C.Harmsworth,k.P.,&o. (sd.) Reginald Wingate.
FOREIGN OFFICE S.W.
26th May 1919.
Dear Sir Reginald Wingate,
I am very sorry if my reply to Colonel Wedgwood
$as occasioned you any inconvenience. In using the expression
"domestic matters" I referred only to the relations of the
Foreign Office with its officials and my words were, I think,
clearly understood by the House to have no other meaning. You
will have observed, perhaps, that both in the House and in
the press attempts had been made to show that there was some
divergence between your views and those of the Foreign Office
in regard to recent developments of the Egyptian question.
Let me say that I warmly support the principle to
which you advert in your letter of March 29th to Mr. Balfour. I
