utter lack of real patriotic qualities, the exceeding
badness of most of the effendis and their adherents, and
especially of the extremists whom the remainder a.llow to
terrorise them.
I have told you what the Cairo official idee, is, as to
future requirements, but the idea of us who know the pro
vinces, as it is a very clear one too, is that unless there
is a very much stronger police control and an adequate secret
service there will be another outbreak before long, and next
time they will do it better.
There now; end I hope I haven’t bored you stiff with
a.ll the above.,
I see that Billy Gore is taking an interest in our
affairs. If they put h im on the Commission please tell him
that Ugypt isn’t what the Cairo people think it is or think
i t ought to be, and that there are a few people like my
humble self and a friend of mine, one Hugh Jones whom he
knows, and who did some canvassing for him in Horth Wales,
who can tell him more than he will ever hear in Cairo.
Hugh Jones is our political officer in this province
and is living here at Briga.de H.Q,. vfoich is my house; and
I have been lending him a hand now and then in his work, or
more frequently and usefully, a motor.
It has all been most interesting and at times amusing
but there have been far tooacmy casualties altogether.
Still it has been a valuable experience which I wouldn’t
have missed for anything.
Best love and salaams to all.
