cleared the street and killed six of the
demonstrators. It was on this day that the massacre
of Armenians began.
General Chauvel thought that there had been
too much ioroearance in Cairo. For instance when
demonstrations had been forbidden, the Egyptians
had burial processions every day of the victims who
had fallen in the riots, and when the supply of
these gave out they purchased corpses at the Kasr
el Aini Hospital for use in thes processions.
In Port Said, Zagazig and Tantah, where there
had been some serious shooting on the first day of
the rioting, no further troubles whatever had
occurred. At one moment General Bulfin had the Cairo
nationalists tT stone cold", but his policy of severe
repressive measures had been reversed with dubious
results.
I Questioned General Chauvel as to the alleged
ill-treatment of the Egyptian Labour corps, of which
