PRIVATE.
Referring to my 1628 of 6th November.
I think it is not unlikely that the self-determin- .
ation policy indicated in your 1324 (70/391) may have its
repercussion amongst Egyptian Nationalists who will no
doubt desire similar treatment for Egypt.
I have no definite indication that active agitation
in this sense is at present probable, but there are rumours
which I cannot altogether ignore that influential natives
wish to sound the American Representative here with-a view
to their aspirations being made known to President Wilson.
If it is possible for you to give me some indication
of the views of H.li.Gr. in the event of press discussion
arising regarding the future of Egypt, it would be very
helpful to me.

I Your private telegram November 8th.
We have had up to now no indication of such Native aspir-
-ations nor of form they are likely to take.
Reforms will only be (?undertaken) after obtaining views
of leading British and Native authorities. You may rest
assured that nothing will be decided except in close con-
-sultation with you.
You should keep me fully informed of any developments on
lines you mention.
NOTE
I have most scrupulously carried out the instruction con
tained in the last paragraph of the above telegram and I
beg that His liajesty* s Government may be placed in full
possession of all telegrams, despatches and letters v/hich
have passed between the Foreign Office and myself from the
above date up to the time I was summoned to London from
Egypt.
