The following are extracts from private tele-
-grams and correspondence between the Foreign Office and my-
-self in regard to the effect on the Egyptians of the policy
of self-determination and the reception by me of three Egypt-
-ian nationalists leaders on the 16th November 1918 at the
Residency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, established in the provinces and regions considered part of, or under the influence of, British India. .
It is now past history but as my action in
receiving the gentlemen has been questioned, I think it is
right you should know what actually occurred and my views on
the subject.

these Nationalists that they should have come in the first
instance to expose their views to the High Commissioner, thus
showing confidence in the Representative of His .Majesty's
Government.
Had they kept secret their very advanced views
which had been much strengthened by the issue of the self-
deterMnation proclamation for Syria, Palestine, Arabia and
Mesopotamia, we might have been face to face with serious
tg
