Dear Sir Hu^h Bernes,
I heve just heard from Femway. He writes that,
out, in India they are pressing the Nushki extension work
vigorously: that the D.G.m. Works has just returned to
Quetta, from a visit to Kundi, which you will remember, is the
5th Stage beyond Dalbandin end the Tth on the Nushki side of
Fobat: and that it would seem that later proposals are,
for military reasons, likely to take the form of a Flailway
to Seindak which is 45 miles short of Fobat itself. The
foregoing will, I know, interest you as will also the fact
that they have now satisfied themselves that anything in the
form of a motor propelled Commercial service, beyond Dalbandin,
which I infer is what their original proposals favoured has,
on expert advice, been ruled out as inadvisable,
I am writing Ramsay pointing out that should mili
tary reasons necessitate the early consideration of an exten
sion of the line beyond Dalbandin, it would be as well for us
to beer in mind that Mirjawa, and not Seindek, would form the
best temporary terminus. The puestion is one in which many
important considerations of a Political, Military as well as
Commercial and engineering nature are directly involved.
Wherever the temporary terminus may
be, the ultimate terminus must be on the Baluchistan-Seiste,n
Frontier, either at Dewan Chah or some other suitable spot in
its vicinity.
From the Gulf to Koh-i-galik Siah, there runs a chain
of hills, the Eastern ridge of which forms, to all intents,
the borders between British Baluchi ft*# end Persia. At Moh-
t-Malik Siah this chain makes a right-angled turn to the West
r no t hence becomes the boundary bet, ween the Persian Governor
ships of Kerman and Khorassan (Seistan Depy Governorship).

The file contains correspondence, memoranda, and other papers relating to railway projects in Persia [Iran] and the surrounding region. The papers deal with the proposals for, planning, and progress of, several railway lines, including one from the Mediterranean to India, the Trans-Persian Railway, the Baghdad Railway, and the Nushki and Dalbandin extension from Quetta. At the back of the file are a number of official reports on Parliamentary debates within the House of Commons, dating from 10 July 1912 to 25 May 1914, all of which feature railways (folios 128-218). Also at the rear of the file are three maps:
