Baghdad to Khnnikin nlong the old caravan route.
In the beginning of 1911 I obtained the support of
a powerful group and proceeded to Constantinople to make
another attempt to secure this Concession.
I had previously been to the Foreign Office and at
their request had given them a written statement as to what
I intended doing, which Statement they forwarded to Sir
Gerard Lowther, the British Ambassador to Turkey. Before
leaving London I had a final interview with Sir Francis
wampDell, Chief Clerk at the Foreign Office, and was assured
by nim that I had their fullest sympathy, and that they would
in no way oppose my project -- quite the contrary. I am
quoting his very words.
The question of official support they held over for
further consideration.
I arrived in Constantinople in the middle of March
at tne very time tnat Mr. Huguenin, the representative of the
Baghdad Railway, had persuaded the Turkish Government to allow
the Company to commence work on the section belov/ the Taurus
Range while continuing work on the Taurus section: and further
had obtained a new Concession to build a branch from Alexandretta
to the main line, and also to make extensive Harbour Works at
Alexandretta
