officials arrived at Dakka from Kabul to
enquire into the affair and to them the
Sarhang denied all knowledge of the

but some of the khassadars are said to have
stated before the officials that they were
ordered by the Sarhang to attack Smatzai.
The Sarhang has dismissed these men, and
the officials, who are about to return to Kabul
after receiving handsome presents from both
the Sarhang and the Hakim of Lalpura, are
said to be inclined to support the Sarhang’s
version of the affair. The Amir’s reply to the
Viceroy’s letter is awaited.
Chaman, the Khusrogi outlaw, with a
few of his friends among the Peshawari out
laws, and Akbarai, Muhammad Din, and other
Khusrogis, have left for Kabul on receipt of a
summons from the Governor of Jalalabad.

Breech-loading rifles and a liberal supply
of ammunition have been issued to all Afghan
khassadars on this border. As there appears
to be no check on the consumption of the
khassadars’ ammunition, most of it will prob

cases pending (see Journals for April and May).
They were given to understand that Govern
ment insisted upon full redress for the Samir
raid (see Journal for January), and also for
other petty raids proved against them. After
some discussion, the Khani Khel Maliks agreed
to bring in the jirga of the recalcitrant
sections with all the property raided in the
Samir case, and the men charged with subse

to bridges, telegraph lines, and trees on the
Parachinar-Thal road, so that a settlement of
all outstanding charges might be arrived at.
A later report states that, though the Maliks
are willing to comply with our demands, the
