ment protection against the Mullas who, they
allege, are supported by the Khan of Lalpura
and his men. They further asserted that the
movement had been fostered by His Highness
the Amir. The Musa Khels of Mitai, who
receive allowances from Government, have
also been successfully worked on by the Mullas,
and are afraid to come in and draw their
allowances, and are openly discussing the advi
sability of going to Kabul. In these circum
stances, it has been decided to take no steps
with regard to demarcation until the Amir
addresses Government on the subject. Mean
while, information from Kabul states that the
Amir has directed Sardar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. Abdul Kuddus Khan
to select 7 officials familiar with the Mohmand
clans and the Mohmand country, and to submit
their names for appointment to the Commis
sion which the Afghan Government expects
to have shortly to depute to demarcate this
boundary.
Muhammad Sadik Khan and Muhammad
Shah Khan, the two refugee Khans of Lalpura
who have been in British territory for some
years and in receipt of allowances from Govern
ment, have asked to be allowed to apply to
the Amir for permission to return to Afghan
istan. They have been informed that Govern
ment are quite indifferent as to their applying
to the Amir; but that once they leave India,
their allowances will lapse, and will not again
be restored under any circumstances.
JVaziristan .—On the 23rd April, a Shin-
wari reservist of the 40th Pathans, temporarily
employed with the Southern Whziristan
Militia, deserted from Wana with a Martini-
Henry rifle and 40 rounds of ammunition.
On the morning of the 25th April, the theft
of 600 rounds of Martini-Henry ammunition
from the Wana post was discovered. The
guard has been placed under arrest, and
enquiries are being made.
The distribution of the last half-year’s
allowances to the Mahsuds was completed
early in May. Although there is some dis
content among the old Maliks and dismissed
Militia men, the tribe, as a whole, appear
well content with the relations existing
between them and Government, and anxious
that they should not be altered.
Inter-tribal fighting between the Mahsuds
and Wazirs continues. The Mahsuds recently
made a raid in Shaki and carried off 120 sheep.
On the 2 nd May, the telegraph line was
cut at Karkanoba.
On the 3 rd May, as a picquet from Kajuri,
proceeding in advance of a convoy on t e
Ngandi Oba road, approached its position near
Karkanoba, a volley was fired into it by a gang
of raiders estimated at about 30 men. 1«o

A note accompanying each memorandum states that they are 'based upon reports, the accuracy of which it is not always possible to guarantee'.

The memoranda relating to Persia, divided into sections concerning Tehran, Bushire, Shiraz, Arabistan, Henjam, other locations in the region, and general matters, include information on political affairs, Russian influence, arms, quarantine, shipping, the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , telegraphs, oil, loans, law and order, British post offices in Persia, and customs.

The memoranda regarding affairs on and beyond the North-West Frontier Region of British India bordering Afghanistan. of India include similar information on Khorasan, Seistan [Sistan], and Baluchistan.
