Kansu Provinces, regarding the Dalai Lama, to
the effect that the British Minister in Peking
had requested the Wai-wu-pu to take steps to
prevent the Dalai Lama from fleeing into
Russian territory. In consequence of this, the
Titai of Kashgar has sent troops towards
Khotan to seize the Lama if he attempts to
reach Russian territory by that route.

16th. He reports that the relations between
the Arandu villagers and the people of Birkot,
the Afghan cantonment on the opposite side
of the river, are not as cordial as they might
he. Formerly there used to be a fair amount
of friendly intercourse between the two villages;
hut since the appointment, five months ago, of
the new Afghan General, Zahardust Khan,
at Asmar, he has forbidden all communica
tions between Birkot and the Chitralis. A
bridge which formerly existed across the
Kunar River was also pulled down by his order.
The present garrison at Birkot consists of 600
infantry, with two obsolete muzzle-loading guns
of Amir Sher Ali Khan’s time.
The hostilities between Nawagai and Dir
have not aroused much interest in Chitral.
