A Persian merchant here, Haji Mirza Assad-
nlla, was suspected of having recently received
62 cases. Eleven found in his possefsion have
been confiscated by the Postmaster.
9. {Vide paragraph 11 of Memorandum
for Novemher 1905.) The result of enquiries
made between 9th and 13th November from
guards, soldiers, and charvadars (muleteers) on
the road between Shiraz and Dashtarjin, the
second stage west of Shiraz, tends to show
that there is a certain improvement in the
state of affairs on the road between Shiraz
and Kazeroon. On this portion the exactions
of the road guards and soldiers would appear
to he reduced to a minimum, since His Majesty’s
Consul, travelling purposely without sowars,
was subjected to no annoyance. The Tufang-
chis, if they do assist muleteers in recover
ing stolen goods or animals, exact heavy
rewards. Muleteers complain most bitterly
of the exactions, both of Tufangchis and
soldiers, on the portion of the road between
Kazeroon and Borasjoon, more particularly at
the latter place and at Kumarij. About 8th
November, there was a rise of about 20 per
cent in tbe prices of all necessaries in Shiraz.
These prices being fixed by the Beglar Begi
(Salar-us-Sultan), it has been popularly sup
posed that he has adopted these means to
foment the deep discontent already existing
against the Vazier of Ears.
10. ( Vide paragraph 15 of Memorandum
for November 1905.) With reference to the
agitation against the Sardar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. -i-Akram, it appears
that the trouble had its origin in the action of a
certain Mulla named Mirza Mahomed, who
caused a house belonging to a Jew to be pulled
down on the alleged ground that it overlooked
that of his neighbour. The Mulla in ques
tion is the son of the late Mujtahid Ali Akbar
Khan, who gained notoriety for the leading
part which he took in the Tobacco Monopoly
Biots. The Jew appealed to the Sardar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. -i-
Akram (the Governor-General’s Yazier), be
tween whom and Mirza Mahomed an acri
monious contest appears to have followed,
the latter sending a message, to the effect
that he was not his father’s son if he did not
cause the Yazier to be expelled from Shiraz.
The clergy appear to have combined. They have
sent a long telegram to the Prime Minister,
detailing popular grievances against the Sardar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. .
At the instance of His Majesty’s Consul,
special steps were taken by the Local Gov
ernment for the protection of the Bank
premises, &c., and of the Jews.
Another attack was made on the 16th
November on the Jewish quartei, but it
was repulsed by soldiers. On the 17th, Sheikh
Mahomed, the instigator of the movement, sent
a verbal message to His Majesty s Consul,
