of tofangchis and the general unsatisfactory
condition of the Bushire road, assured Mr.
Grabame that he had decided to replace the
road guard, Sarhazes (soldiers), supplemented
at certain points by a few horsemen. I he
change, however, does not appear to have been
carried out, hut the number of tofangchis is
said to have been reduced: hence a wag of
Shiraz has said, “ when the Prince is away,
only half the number of guards are repiired to
keep the road”.
The following robberies on the Bushire-
Shiraz road, all in the Kaluni Abdoui district,
have been reported to His Britannic Majesty’s
Consul:—
11th August ... 1 Bale piece-goods belonging
to Messre. Dixon.
23rd September ... 2 Bales piece-goods belonging
to Messrs. Ziegler & Co.
2nd October ... Piece-goods belonging to
Persian merchant (number of
bales unknown).
Another robbery is reported as having re
cently occurred in the same district, and it
appears that on or about 24th September one
of the
Sardar
Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division.
-i-Akram’s men, who had been
sent to take steps in regard to a recent robbery
near Khaneh Zaniah, returned to Shiraz, having
been robbed himself.
14. Sadik-ul-Mamalik, the local Gov
ernor of Darab, during His Imperial High
ness’s previous term of office in Pars, has been
recently appointed Governor of Dashti and
Dashtistan.
15. Bushire .—Prince Anatouni, who visit
ed Bushire last year on a commercial mission,
landed on the 27th September; and in the ab
sence of the Russian Consul-General, put up
with M. Gorsky, the Russian Steam Navi
gation Company’s Agent. M. Gorsky states
that the Prince is on a similar mission this
year. The Prince left for Shiraz at the end of
the first week in October.
r ' 16. It is stated on authority which is
usually reliable that a German shipping com
pany is planning a service of steamers to the
Gulf, and that another English line will enter
into competition there. The names of the
Agents of the respective lines have not yet
been mentioned. J
17. Lingah .—On the night of the 1st
September, the Turkish Consular Agent,
Lingah, gave an entertainment in honour of the
anniversary of the accession of the Sultan of
Turkey. A cannon from the Persian Govern
ment House was brought and placed in front
of the Agent’s house, and guns were fired
