,
LONDON.
Sir,
I have the honour to state' that I have received
a communication from Messrs Boote Edgar and Company,
Solicitors, of 20th Booth Street Manchester, giving
particulars of goods shipped to Baghdad by Messrs
Alois Schweiger and Company Limited of 34 Princess
Street, Manchester, and stated to have been looted or
burned just prior to the occupation of Basrah by His
Majesty f s Forces.
From copies of the invoices submitted it appears that
the Baghdad Agents of Messrs Alois Schweiger and Coy
were Messrs Robert Wonckhaus & Coy of Hamburg, and I
understand that a firm of the same name is established
in Vienna.
Under the circumstances, before replying to Messrs
Boote Edgar & Coy, I would ask that I may be informed
as to whether Messrs Alois Schweiger & Coy are a British
firm.
I am sending a copy of this letter to the Government
of India in the Foreign Department, in continuation of
previous correspondence
I have the honour to be
Sir,
Your most obedient servant.
