of the Cher ana. The Chenana have been proved to have been implicated ia
this robbery and are being held responsible for the recovery of the animals
and goods looted.
The Divisional Adviser, Amara, reports that Shaikh Abdul Karim, the son
of Ghazban, has surrendered himself unconditionally to the Amara authorities
SktjshtaR.
The condition of the town and the district is satisfactory, and the
Muhanam passed off without incident.
A dispute has occurred between Messrs, the Anglo-Persian Oil
Company and some local contractors employed on the railway work 1
between Derrakhazineh and the oil-fields. The contractors^ considering v
that they had been unjustly treated, built a wall across the Derrakhazineh
road and thus caused a stoppage of all traffic. The wall was eventually demo
lished and the matter is being enquired into.
Isfahan (August 21st-September 18th).
The disbandment of the South Persia Rifles, which commenced on the
4th September, has caused considerable commotion in the town, but the excite
ment soon subsided and the disbandment is proceeding quietly ; the arms and
ammunition being deposited in the Consulate.
The Governor-General is exceedingly anxious to buy a portion of the
arms and ammunition, if they are available for sale, also some saddles and
other equipment.
The Courts of Justice have been reopened in Isfahan.
Colonel Salar Nizam is expected to arrive shortly to take over the com
mand of the gendarmerie.
The Shiraz road is not very safe, and several robberies are reported to
have occurred. Robberies are also reported on the Kashan road.
Moddaber-es-Sultaneh, Deputy Governor of Abadeh, has been recalled and
left for Shiraz on the 23rd August.
Local authorities have received telegraphic information from the Persian
Government that M. Choubine, formerly Director of the Russian Bank in
Isfahan, will be leaving soon for Isfahan in the capacity of Russian Consular
Agent.
Dr. Roland, French Consular Agent, who has been away in the Bakhtiari
country and surrounding districts for the last two months, has returned to his
post there.
Captain E. G. B. Peel, His Majesty’s Consul, Ahwaz, arrived from Tehran
on the 6th September and left on the 18th for Chahar Mahal.
Bakhtiari.
The Bakhtiari family squabble has not been settled yet but there has
been no active hostility between the parties. There was a rumour that
Qawam-ed-Dowleh and Sarim-ed-Dowleh were thinking of going to Chahar
Mahal in order to bring about a reconciliation between the Khans, but this
was later denied and Haji Agha Norulla was then said to be about to act as
a go-between.
Shiraz.
The Muharram passed off quietly and the riots which were adumbrated
by His Majesty’s Consul {vide last month’s summary) did not materialise.
