They report that the samples they brought from the interior have been sent

Trtjcial Coast.
10th November.
995. Miscellaneous. —The pearling season has just ended. The take is
poor and the market low
996. H.M.S. Sphinx visited the pearl banks on the 20th October. On
sighting her the pearling dhows hoisted their national (Jowasim) flags, with the
exception of a samhook owned by one Juma bin Hashed, a resident of Khan,
who flew a different flag. Another sambook belonging to one Bin Obeidullah
(Nakhoda Bin Kalli), a resident of Ajman, flew the Turhisk flag. The
Sphinx sent a jolly-boat to both these sambooks, took their flags and
sailed.
997. It being reported that the inhabitants of Katar and Tangistan
intended to attack the pearling dhows belonging to Debai, much apprehension
was felt by the Behai part of the fleet who kept a stiict watch at night till the
termination of the pearling season.
Bahkain.
3rd October to 27th November.
998. Local Government (EasaJ. —It is said that in Hasa, subscriptions
are being raised in connection with the Turco-Italian war.
999. Katar. —It is stated that there are at present in Doha 58 soldiers,
2 Zahits, one gunner and two guns.
1000. Katif. —It is reported that the Kaimmakam of Katif called a meet
ing of notable inhabitants on the 16th November, and after belauding the
Turkish Government, pressed upon them the necessity of contributing towards
( the expenses of the Turco-Italian war. People of Katif have so far subscribed
about T£2,000. In the villages also the call has met with an enthusiastic
support and money is said to be pouring in.
1001. Condition of country. —News from Darin states that the Al-bin-AB
tribe arrived there from Doha, and have set up about 150 huts outside the
town.
1002. Condition of 7'oads, telegraph and postal service. —It was reported
about the end of October that some of the Manasir Bedouin waylaid a caravan
on its way from Hasa to Ojair and carried off 32 maunds of dates. No casual
ties w r ere reported.
1003. Foreign interests. —The S.S. Lawoe chartered by the Arab
steamers line arrived in Bahrain on 3rd October with the following cargo :—
450 tons country firewood
582 bundles charcoal
158 packages miscellaneous merchandise.
1004, Passages were booked by about 200 intending pilgrims by a
steamer which was promised by the Arab Company. Some 50 days have now
elapsed and no steamer has made its appearance. The would-be pilgrims are
much disgusted, as it is now probable that they cannot be in time for this
year’s Haj. There is very general indignation against the Company and its
agent, which is not allayed by the specious promises of the latter.
1005. Miscellaneous. —Mr. Marx left on 8th October by S.S. Malda at
a day’s notice for Bombay via Bushire. He was recalled from Home on the
declaration of war between Italy and Turkey. .
1006. The pearling fleet returned on the 25th October, Quffal having been
declared. The pearl market is at present moderate.
