that she developed a serious leak. She put into Dowan for protection and re
turned to Lingah on the 23rd November. The Captain of the ship, a British
subject, refused to proceed to Bombay unless half the ship’s cargo was discharged.
As no proper charter was made, the arrangement between the owner and the
charter party being verbal, a lively dispute arose as to who was liable for the
cost of unloading the ship. It was eventually decided that Hassan bin Ali
Sumaya should discharge the stone ballast from the ship, and she left for Bombay
on the 2nd December 1912.
Foreign interests. 1146. In the middle of the month the Sunni community opened a subscrip
tion for Turkey, about Rs. 50,000 being collected. Much discussion arose as
to the manner of remitting the amount. The Khaja family, with a view to gaining
aggrandisement, had previously promised to send the money subscribed to Saiyid
Talib at Busreh, but this course was opposed by many of the biggest donors,
and it was eventually decided that the money should be forwarded via Bombay.
1147. It is understood that a similar subscription has been opened at
Debar
Miscellaneous. 1148. A relief Vice-Consulate guard of one Non-Commissioned Officer and
nine men of the 2nd Queen Victoria’s Own Rajput Light Infantry arrived by
SS. “ Palitana ” on the 25th November. The relieved guard of the 7th Duke
of Connaught’s Own Rajputs embarked by the slow mail 4 4 Barala ’' on the
26th November.
A relief guard of 7 men for Basidu, of the same regiment, also arrived by
“ Palitana ” and were conveyed to Basidu by R. I. M. S. “ Minto 5/ . The
relieved guard also left for Bombay by “ Barala ”.
1149. The boat carrying mails from Basidu to Lingah was capsized by a
squall on the 25th November. Nine persons were drowned and the mails were
lost.

1150. Monsieur Zwinne is expected here shortly from Bushire to take over
charge of the Customs from Monsieur Collette, who returns to Lingah.

1152. A petty robbery of goods to the value of Krans 190 belonging to a Hindu
occurred on the road between Bandar Abbas and Minab, on the 2nd November.
1153. The Eastern Rug and Trading Company of Kerman has amalgamated
with a company known as the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers, Limited. The
latter is a large concern, and is prepared to spend a considerable sum in developing
the carpet industry at Kerman. An agent has been sent to Kerman to take over

1154. A sharp earthquake shock was experienced here on the morning of the
17th November, and some of the cracks in the Consulate building caused by rhe
shock of the *20th October (vide paragraph 1079) opened out to a greater extent.

Local Officials, 1155. The Amir-i-Mufakham, since his arrival, has been greatly handicapped
by the lack of money, and Mr. Stass, the Financial Agent, has a very difficult task
in collecting the revenue. Salar-i-Muid, the son of the Amir, has gone to Bam as
Governor and Oirat-us-Sultaneh as Governor to Sirj an.
