1440. With reference to diary entry No. 1435 supra, Shaikh Hamdan and his
brother, Sagar, with Salim bin Aamir, Shaikh of the Bani Bu Hassan, and their
following, returned to Maskat on the 17th. Shaikh Hamdan and his brother
remained in Maskat till the end of the month.
1441. On the 20th the “ Nur-ul-Bahr ” left for Khabura returning to Maskat
on the 24th with about 200 men of the Bani Umar who are, it was reported, to
replace the Hadhramis garrisoning the Maskat gates and towers. The “ Nur-ul-
Bahr ” again left for Sur on the same day.
1442. With reference to diary entry No. 1264, Monsieur Wram returned
to Maskat from Lingeh on the 9th.
1443. On the 10th Ali Musa Khan, the notorious Maskat arms dealer, was
deported to India by the order of the Sultan for infringing the regulations of the
Maskat Arms Warehouse. His sudden deportation has made a wholesome
impression on many other persons whose conduct is not free from reproach in the
matter of the Warehouse regulations.
1444. S. S. “ Locksley Hall ” arrived on the 12th and landed three cases am
munition, two cases arms and one case accessories.
1445. Muhammad Rafia, a well-known arms merchant, and at one time agent
to a German firm of arms, visited Maskat from Basrah on the 23rd.
Custom®. 1446. With reference to diary entry No. 1266, Salim bin Abdulla al
Khaimri was appointed Superintendent of Customs on the 4th vice Abdul
Karim Khan, who was handed over to this Consulate that day for trial under
Maskat Arms Warehouse regulations. He was found guilty and accordingly sen
tenced to six months' hard labour. He was sent to Bombay jail on the 17th to
undergo the sentence there.
Foreign interests. 1447. One Abdullah bin Haji Karumullah Baluch visited the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency.
on the 6th. He is a resident of the vicinity of Jask and the object of his visit was
to complain of the ill-treatment he received by the hands of the Shaikh of Dibai.

Britannic Majesty’s Excellency the Admiral and after leaving the ship received a salute of 11 guns.

His Excellency the Admiral, accompanied by His Flag Lieutenant, returned
the Shaikh’s visit at 10-30 a. m. on 8th at the Customs House, Manama.
1450. The Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. , accompanied by Captain Shakespeare, Political
Agent, Kuwait, left for ’Oqair on the 14th and returned on the 19th instant.
Miscellaneous. 1451 • 0n the eve of his departure to India Sath Narayan Maharaj, of the firm
of Gangaram Tikamdas and Company, and Director of Customs for the Shaikh,
went over to Muharaq to bid"good-bye to Shaikh Isa, who gave him a very good
certificate. Sath Narayan Maharaj is one of the three brothers all known as
“ Maharaj ”, who take it in turn to run the various branches of the firm of Ganga
ram Tikamdas and Company at Karachi, Bombay and Bahrain, and at the last-
named place the one in charge is also Director of Customs. Sath Narayan has
been in charge of Customs for the last two years and during his tenure of the ap
pointment,, the large cargo shed was completed, a new upper storey built to the
Custom House, the jetty lengthened from quite a short one to 600 feet completed
and 200 feet more nearly finished, and a lot of reclamation done, besides the
reorganization of the arrangement for sorting and delivery of goods. In fact the
whole Custom House has been transformed and consequent! v Sath Narayan Maharaj
