Consular diaries detailing affairs in Ahwaz [Ahvāz], Persia [Iran]. The diaries were submitted on a fortnightly basis by the British Consul at Ahwaz, although for some periods they were submitted monthly. The diaries cover the period of the Second World War and the Anglo-Soviet occupation of Iran, beginning in August 1941. Subjects covered in the diaries include: the actions of the local Persian administration, including the movements of local Persian officials; the economic situation, including agricultural production, harvests, irrigation, food supply and prices; tribal affairs in the surrounding region, with frequent reference to the Bakhtiari, Kughilu (also spelt Kuh Galu) and Arab tribes, tribes in Luristan [Lorestān], and their relations with the Persian authorities; the movements of foreigners; internal security; public health; local politics and elections; communications, including roads and railways; meteorological observations; British interests, including the movements of British officials and British subjects; Soviet interests; propaganda and public opinion.

The file includes a divider, which gives a list of correspondence references contained in the file by year. This is placed at the back of the correspondence.

The papers are arranged in approximate chronological order from the front to the rear of the file.

Physical characteristics

Foliation: the foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the front cover with 1, and terminates at the inside back cover with 334; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto The front of a sheet of paper or leaf, often abbreviated to 'r'. side of each folio. A previous foliation sequence, which is also circled, has been superseded and therefore crossed out.
