( 8 ) • During the period under report the respondi-
bilit/ for the bread distribution of Ahwaz was taken from
the municipality, and made that of the Finance Department.

(9) , Owing to the lack of rain the price of black
market wheat has risen slightly.
(10) . The endeavours of the Finance Department, the
Gove.nor-General and the Municipality have failed to improve
the meat situation.

Wheat is still being purchased against the
sugar barter scheme though the percentage of sugar paid has
been reduced from 15^ to 10^. About 19700 tons of grain have
up-to-date been Collected.

Consular diaries detailing affairs in Ahwaz [Ahvāz], Persia [Iran]. The diaries were submitted on a fortnightly basis by the British Consul at Ahwaz, although for some periods they were submitted monthly. The diaries cover the period of the Second World War and the Anglo-Soviet occupation of Iran, beginning in August 1941. Subjects covered in the diaries include: the actions of the local Persian administration, including the movements of local Persian officials; the economic situation, including agricultural production, harvests, irrigation, food supply and prices; tribal affairs in the surrounding region, with frequent reference to the Bakhtiari, Kughilu (also spelt Kuh Galu) and Arab tribes, tribes in Luristan [Lorestān], and their relations with the Persian authorities; the movements of foreigners; internal security; public health; local politics and elections; communications, including roads and railways; meteorological observations; British interests, including the movements of British officials and British subjects; Soviet interests; propaganda and public opinion.
The file includes a divider, which gives a list of correspondence references contained in the file by year. This is placed at the back of the correspondence.
